Synopsis:
At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream--good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. Worse, in today's single world, Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth.
Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protege to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal's eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can't be found at Supercuts or The Gap.
Cal and Emily aren't the only ones looking for love in what might be all the wrong places: Cal's 13-year-old son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), is crazy about his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), who harbors a crush on Cal. And despite Cal's makeover and his many new conquests, the one thing that can't be made over is his heart, which seems to keep leading him back to where he began.
Review:
Funny, entertaining movie. Very optimistic and almost makes you believe in love. Almost... except I am too cynical :P
Still, Ryan Gosling is coooooolllll and has a body that looks photoshopped! :P And the rest of the cast were good as well. Well, without giving too much away, this is almost like the American version of the British romance comedy - Love Actually.
Both are good of course, in a slightly difference manner. I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other, but it's nice to have a good romance comedy that falls into my category of being not too stupid :) I love my romantic comedies...
Of course, being quite out of sync with the movie market recently, will have to thank Skycloud for dragging me along for this movie. Especially since there were like 3-4 tries of attempts to confirm a movie date, only for me or her not being able to make it. :) Glad we managed to catch it... and glad that for once, I didn't watch it at GV, and I sincerely appreciate the more comfortable seats at Cathay, as well the fact that I wasn't forced to watch through 20 mins of adverts that have been shown to death... and I actually think the sound is better too (but a romantic comedy is really not a very good gauge of the sound system)
So.. all in all, well worth the ticket price, and also good as a stay home movie :)
